Margie - Dr. Marga's February 2014 Mermaid of the Month
When I first visited Dr. Marga's website her Mermaid stories were what I read first. I was filled with hope and anticipation that I might have found a doctor that could "fix" me. I was diagnosed with breast cancer April 2010. I underwent a double mastectomy and opted for immediate reconstruction with silicone implants. I had 6 rounds of chemotherapy and 28 radiation treatments. I did whatever my doctors told me to do, not knowing there were other options out there.
Those of you who go through these treatments know how you get to know familiar faces. I kept running into this one gal at every appointment. It seemed like we were on the same track with the same doctors. I remember sitting with her on the couch at our plastic surgeon's office. We looked down our shirts and said, "we went through all of this for THIS?" Neither one of us were happy with how we looked, but most importantly how we felt. She was a nurse and did some research. I ran into her months later, and she told me about Dr. Massey and the procedures she had had done already in New Orleans. I was in my car traveling to meet friends at Isle of Palms in Charleston, SC. I remember crying all the way there because I will filled with hope that someone could put this Humpty Dumpty together again.
My husband, parents, and I traveled back down to Charleston to hear Dr. Massey speak. We sat through her presentation and learned all the things that I should have done. I'm not one to dwell on "shoulda, woulda, coulda," and we met with Dr. Massey the next day- SUNDAY! What doctor meets with you on a Sunday and spends 3 hours with you? I knew I had found a doctor like no other. That's Dr. Massey – there's no one like her. She's one in a million. She knows what she's talking about and is the most experienced doctor I've ever met. She touches you in more ways than you can describe. I traveled to New Orleans in June of 2012 to re-do my reconstruction. She performed a bilateral gap flap on me. The care I received at St. Charles Surgical Hospital was phenomenal. It was like being at a spa! All my other procedures have been at Roper in Charleston, SC. Again, Dr. Massey makes sure you have the best care and nurses available. We are just about done with me. Just a little more "tweaking," and I'm done. I have mixed emotions about that. Yes, I'm going to be glad to be done with surgeries. I've had a total of 13. But not talking to and seeing Dr. Massey makes me sad. She has become an important part of my life. I thank God that she was put into my life to heal my body and spirit. I am very proud to be one of Dr. Massey's Mermaids. I hope this message will lead more women to her because she will definitely put you back together again!
